Why We Choose Organic Tea
When we started 50 CUPS, our number one goal was to ensure that all of our teas were as “good for you” as possible. This meant we carefully chose herbs, teas, and adaptogens that had the highest nutritional properties possible, and sourced these ingredients from organic farms and trusted suppliers that use healthy and sustainable agricultural practices. It’s kind of our thing, and here’s why:
Conventional tea is covered in toxic chemicals.
When tea is grown conventionally, it is typically treated with things like synthetic pesticides, growth hormones, antibiotics and chemical fertilizers to help control pests and promote growth. These chemicals remain on the tea leaves and are ingested when the tea is consumed which in turn has negative health effects on the body. However, organic tea cannot be grown with any sort of the chemicals or hormones listed above, meaning its safer, less toxic, and grown the way mother nature intended. In fact, studies have shown that those who consume an organic diet can reduce their pesticide level by 90%, that’s huge.
Organic tea has increased levels of beneficial compounds.
Since organic tea is grown in a soil that is rich in nutrients, it in turn has a higher nutritional makeup- expecially when it comes to its antioxidant levels. In a recent study published by researchers at Newcastle University in England, it was discovered that organic produce contained higher levels of antioxidants and lower levels of pesticides compared to conventionally grown produce. Antioxidants are important to the human body as they help lower inflammation and oxidattive stress by fighting off free radicals that are known to damage DNA and cellular replication. Drinking organic tea means that we are giving our bodies what they need to stay healthy and fight off disease.
Organic tea just tastes better
Obviously we want our teas to be as “good for you” as possible, but we also want them to be “good tasting” as well. Sourcing organic tea helps us with this: it has been reported that organic tea has a fresher and fuller bodied flavor than conventional tea. This is probably because organic tea is grown in natural and vitamin rich soil, which can lead to the development of more complex and stronger flavors. That’s a win-win.
Organic tea is better for our world
Conventional farming has been thought to have negative impacts on our planet shown in the form of soil erosion, chemical runoff, and pollution. Organic farming, on the other hand, does utilize synthetic or chemical based pesticides or fertilizers which means that it reduces water and soil contamination. In addition, it uses fewer resources: according to a study completed by the Center for Food Safety, organic agriculture uses 30-50 percent less fossil fuel energy than conventional farming. By choosing to drink organic tea, you are supporting sustainable and environmentally friendly practices.
As the food and beverage industry is becoming more and more saturated with products grown using harmful synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides, it is becoming more important now than ever to pay attention to the quality of the food and beverages that you are ingesting each day, and to the farming practices that your consumption is supporting. After all, you are what you eat (or drink), and we owe one to mother nature, too!
